Whitireia and WelTec Joint Leadership Team
Chris Gosling is Chief Executive of the Wellington Institute of Technology and Whitireia Community Polytechnic. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) at Whitireia, a position he held for three years. He has worked in the Middle East setting up and operating a polytechnic in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Chris is the former Corporate Services Director at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). This role followed several years in finance and senior management roles in local government in New Zealand.
He is a Chartered Accountant with membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and a Board member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.
Director Teaching & Learning (Whitireia)
Lawrence Arps has a Masters in Educational Administration and has been the Deputy Chief Executive Academic and previously the Deputy Chief Executive Operations at Whitireia. Previous positions include Deputy Chief Executive Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Lawrence came to education from a career in the music and recording industries. He is currently a member of the NZQA/ITP Advisory Committee and the TEC Student Information Working Group.
Director Finance & Operations (Whitireia)
Mark Hewitson was the CFO at Charles Darwin University in Australia and a member of the senior management team. He has worked in senior finance roles in New Zealand and prior to this in the UK. Mark also has an academic background having lectured in accountancy at Massey University. He is a Chartered Accountant and has an MBA from Massey.
Dr Ruth Anderson
Ruth Anderson was the Acting Director at Health Workforce New Zealand and previously held the role of Director, Fellowship Relations and New Zealand Manager with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She has also held senior government and academic roles. Ruth holds a PhD in education (University of Melbourne).
Director Business Development
Mark Johnson was the CEO of Retail New Zealand. He has over 25 years international retail, commercial and transformational change management experience in a variety of competitive and dynamic blue-chip environments. Mark has a BA (Hons) in Business Organisation and a PGDip in Management Studies.
Dr Leanne Ivil
Director Strategy, Performance & Improvement
Leanne Ivil has a PhD in Economics from Massey University. She was previously with Victoria University of Wellington where she was responsible for academic quality assurance and academic governance. She has worked as Chief Advisor on the Institute of Technology and Polytechnics team at the Tertiary Education Commission and prior to this held senior policy management roles with the Auckland Council.
Director People & Capability
Mark has been Director Human Resources with WelTec since 2007, where he is responsible for WelTec’s human resources strategy and change management as well as human resources operations and capability development. With more than 25 years’ experience in human resources, line management, and development roles, Mark has worked in a wide range of organisations covering the not-for-profit, government, state-owned enterprises, and education sectors. Mark has a BA (Victoria University of Wellington), Diploma of Education (Canterbury) and Diploma in Youth and Development (Commonwealth Youth Programme – Asia-Pacific Centre). He is a member of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand.
Director Finance & Operations (WelTec)
James Smith is a Chartered Accountant who has more than 20 years’ experience as an accountant having held both the CFO and Acting COO positions previously at WelTec. In these roles he managed the financial planning and reporting systems and services, provided financial and strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders, and oversaw the development of various major capital works programmes including the build of the Wellington Regional School of Construction at Petone. James is on a number of tertiary education advisory groups developing accounting policy and practice for the sector.
Dr Julia Hennessy
Director Teaching & Learning (WelTec)
Julia Hennessy was the Executive Dean at WelTec. Previous experience for Julia includes General Manager, Mental Health and Addiction Service for Hutt Valley DHB and Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Health. She worked in the tertiary education sector before being appointed Relationship Manager for the Central Regional Health Authority. Julia also taught on health related programmes in the tertiary sector. She is a Fellow of the College of Nurses Aotearoa (NZ) and was a member of Nursing Council of New Zealand from 2008-2011. PhD (AUT), MEd (Victoria), MMgt (Massey), PG Dip HSM (Massey), BA (Victoria), DipN (Wellington Polytechnic).
