Originating from Tonga, Maggie graduated from Whitireia in 2009 and is now working for Nosh Food Market
Maggie Tu’inukuafe came to New Zealand in July 2007. She is originally from Nuku’alofa in Tonga.
Having decided with her family to come to New Zealand for a tertiary education, Maggie arrived in Auckland and started at Whitireia Community Polytechnic in the Bachelor of Applied Business Studies course, majoring in Marketing.
While completing this degree, Maggie was able to secure a part time job at the Foodtown Supermarket in Auckland’s Mt Eden suburb. She supported her studies with this work and gained valuable ‘first hand’ check out supervisory experience.
Maggie graduated in July 2009 and because of her performance in her part time job as well as having gained a tertiary qualification, she successfully applied for a supervisory role in the newly-opened Nosh Food Market in Dominion Road, Mt Eden, in December 2009.
Since then Maggie has been mainly responsible for supervising checkout staff and reporting on her department’s performance; as well as providing back up management cover when the owner is away. She has also developed a good eye for impact product merchandising in order to maximise sales.
Nosh Food Market has supported Maggie with training programmes. Another benefit of being within the Nosh Food Market environment is that there are employees of many different nationalities.
Maggie has this message for all international students, “Keep striving, have faith in yourself and keep digging for gold, and one day you will find the treasure……………….but the only way to get that is to study hard and whenever you get the chance, work hard and don't let any opportunity pass you by without holding on to it.”
“Always remember if you need help, go back to Whitireia, they always welcome their past and present students. And finally don’t waste your time; keep looking for opportunities as there's always something happening around you,” said Maggie as she reflected on her time at Whitireia.
