Compulsory Student Services Fee

Whitireia charges a Compulsory Student Services Fee to help fund the costs of delivering important services to students.

We continually engage with students, providing an opportunity for them to influence how the Compulsory Students Services Fee (CSSF) is used and is of benefit to them while studying with us.

The funds collected from the CSSF are currently used for the services outlined below and are reported on annually through our Annual Report. Whitireia also contributes financially to these services.

Advocacy and Legal Advice

Advice and first level advocacy is provided to students through our Student Hub. This service provides confidential advice and support on matters of academic appeals, harassment, complaints and information on Whitireia policies. Where more independent advice is required we have contracted the New Zealand Union of Student Associations to provide additional legal and advocacy support.

Careers Advice and Support

We are committed to ensuring students are assisted in making career development choices from the initial inquiry to alumni. Our Career Consultant works with students through their study life cycle with support and advice on study choice and career pathways.

Counselling Services

As Whitireia has a number of campuses and many students studying by distance, it is important that counselling services are available to all students to help with any personal or academic issues that may impact on their success. To achieve this, we have contracted a nationwide provider to provide free and confidential counselling services to all students regardless of location.

Employment Advice

We have a job broker onsite to support students into employment. Students can access the services of our job broker to help prepare for work (CV and interview preparation). Whitireia is also an associate member of Student Job Search (SJS).

Financial Advice and Support

Providing our students with advice on how to manage their limited budgets while studying is a focus of our financial advice service. This service also provides assistance to those who have financial barriers that impact on their learning and ability to succeed.

Health Services

We have a health service that provides primary healthcare to students through our onsite nursing service. The aim of the service is to promote wellness and provide advice on issues such as sexual health, smoking cessation and eating well. Additional services such as physiotherapy, massage therapy and hearing therapy are also provided.

Sports, Recreation and Cultural Activities

A range of events, activities and sports are supported through our Student Hub, in partnership with our students. A number of sports teams participate in competitions in the local community and weekly lunchtime sports events are run on campus. Activities are regularly scheduled that are designed to inform and support students. These include orientation events, wellness activities and fun events to connect students to their place of learning.

Student common rooms and recreational equipment such as pool tables and table tennis tables, televisions and spaces to relax are provided across all campuses.

Clubs and Societies

Our Student Hub promotes and supports any social, academic and cultural clubs in partnership with our students. This currently includes a Christian group, cultural groups and student leadership activities and meetings.

Communication

We have installed a digital media network on our campuses, giving us another mechanism to communicate directly with students.
