Programme Overview

The aim of this programme is to prepare students with the knowledge and practical skills for employment and apprenticeships in the electrical trade.

Programme Outline

In this programme you will learn about:

  • safe work practice for electricians
  • career opportunities within the electro technology industry now and in the future
  • practical hand skills. You will learn tricks of the trade in workshops. You will discover best practice for the use of hand tools, power tools and test instruments
  • what employers' expectations are by participating in practical team exercises
  • modern electrical practice by completing practical projects in the workshop
  • electrical theory
  • the products and equipment of the trade
  • electrical appliances
  • basic introduction to electronics
  • 12v, 230v, 415v and control circuit wiring
  • an introduction to industry regulations and quality control measures
  • maths for the trades
  • communication and being part of a team

Class times for semester one and two are Monday - Wednesday 8am – 4pm 


Entry Requirements

10 credits NCEA Level 1 literacy and 10 credits NCEA Level 1 numeracy or equivalent
