This programme is designed to equip students with intermediate skills in English listening, speaking and writing.
Intermediate English Language Skills consists of tutorials and exercises. Students should attend twenty-three hours per week. Attendance is compulsory and failure to attend may affect final grades.
There are no formal speaking test. However, students' speaking skills are assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the twelve weeks of the programme. The tutor continually assesses students during class conversation activities.
By the completion of the programme, students will obtain a fundamental knowledge of the systems in English pronunciation and English grammar, as well as a proper understanding of how to use these skills and systems in their academic study, and be able to achieve the standard equivalent to IELTS 4.5.
To be admitted to this level, students must:
- Pass Whitireia Community Polytechnic Placement Test Band 3 or an equivalent approved by the Programme Manager
- Possess English language skill to the level of IELTS 4.0
