Learn to understand, speak, read and write English for study, work and everyday situations at Level 3

Learn to communicate independently in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency in academic, community and or employment in English language contexts.

Programme outline

Gain the language skills needed to communicate in most situations with some independence and fluency, in order to take part in everyday life in your community or for academic purposes. Be able to:

  • understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex oral texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context
  • participate with some confidence in sustained spoken discourse on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context
  • understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex written texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context
  • write clear connected texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context

This programme is comprised of four modules designed to build English language skills progressively based around listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Applied English 3A – Build language skills, with particular attention to listening and reading. 

Applied English 3B – Explore academic texts in reading and writing, and to use formal speaking structures.

Applied English 3C – Develop fluency and accuracy at an academic level in all skills, with particular attention to reading, writing and listening, and to acquiring topic information from a variety of sources, exploring academic resources, APA referencing and producing a formal written text.

Applied English 3D – Develop English language at an academic level including locating, summarising and evaluating information in all skills, with particular attention to speaking in an academic context and producing a crafted text (for a specified audience using resource material in English for an academic purpose).


Entry criteria

New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (General) or equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or evidence of English skills based on internal placement test
