Aims: The paper aims to enable the student to develop project management skills and an understanding of effective leadership in relation to Pacific people’s health. This paper builds on the work students will have successfully completed in years one and two of the programme and challenges them to integrate the skills and knowledge gained to be able to take full responsibility for the planning, resourcing and managing of health promotion projects in Pacific communities. This paper will be largely self-directed with tutorial support provided for supervision and mentoring.


NURS7113 – Nursing Practice – Acute

Aims: This paper aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop their nursing skills and practice in acute secondary clinical settings, when working with patients from across the lifespan who experience acute disruptions to their health and well-being. Understanding the nursing role in these clinical settings extends beyond the caring for individual clients, and includes learning the impact these episodes have on a whole family. Nursing in these situations requires the nurse to exercise skill in the educative, mentoring and facilitating role. Students will have the opportunity to critically examine the way mainstream acute care facilities address the particular health needs of Pacific patients and their families.


NURS7114 – Public Health / Health Promotion

NURS7123 – Leadership

Aims: This paper aims to enable the student an opportunity to broaden their understanding of how health and well-being of pacific communities rely on particular leadership styles within the community and hospital settings. Understanding the difference between leadership roles will give students an understanding of how they may develop as leaders. This knowledge will also inform their capacities as managers. Having Pacific Nurse Leaders will assist Pacific communities to obtain better health outcomes and have a voice which empowers them to achieve. Students will also need to be aware of how political context influences the development of policies and procedures.


NURS7124 – Pacific Nursing Praxis

Aims: This paper provides students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice and to consolidate their learning in preparation for their successful transition from student nurse to beginner nurse practitioner. In doing so, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate that they command a wide range of knowledge and skills that enable them to provide safe nursing care within complex and variable contexts. Students who successfully complete this paper are eligible to apply to sit the Nursing Council of New Zealand State Final Examination.
